MATERIALS TECHNOLOGY: CHEMICAL CHARACTERISATION
The area of materials can carry out chemical analyses by spark/arc emission spectrophotometry (SpectroLab) on steels, cast- irons and aluminium alloys.
The elements that can be determined by spectrometry are:
- Base Fe: C, Si, Mn, S, P, Cr, Ni, Mo, Al, Co, Cu, Nb, Ti, V, W, Pb, Sn, Mg and B.
- Base Al: Si, Fe, Cu, Mn, Mg, Zn, Ni, Cr, Pb, Sn, Ti, Ca, Na, P, Sb, Sr and V.
Carbon and sulphur can also be determined by the analysis of combustion gases using a LECO CS-200 analyser.
The area can also carry out semi-quantitative analyses using an EDX analyser (X-ray energy dispersion analysis equipment) from the scanning electron microscope and obtain composition maps for a wide range of materials.
