ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNOLOGY: EVALUATION OF RISKS AND IMPACTS ON THE ENVIRONMENT
Anthropogenic activities disperse many pollutant agents and stressors (chemical organic and inorganic products, invader species, radiations…) which might have an important impact on the environment and human health. Given the circumstances, it is important to evaluate the state of the environment, determine the pressures which affect the unfavorable state and determine the impact or risk which might come from it; as well as to determine the methodologies for the treatment of this condition and to carry out a follow up of their implantation.
The research which is carried out covers all these stages and is mainly focused on:
- Analytical characterisation (physical, chemical and microbiological) and follow up on the state of the affected environment.
- Study of the interaction and transfer between pollutants and environmental vectors at different scales (laboratory, pilot, etc ...) and for modellisation.
- Evaluation of the risk for determining the possibility of adverse effects on human health and ecosystems in contaminated locations and design recovery actions.
- Evaluation of the impact indicators and modellisation of the reactive transportation of pollutants. (river basins, dumps, soils)
- Follow up studies of methodologies for the treatment and recovery at different scales, from laboratory to field (i.e: follow up on invader species, reagents for the treatment of the environment, micrfobiology)
This research group collaborates with several research centres (CETAQUA, CSIC) and university departments (UPC´s Departament Enginyeria Química -Chemical Engineering Department- and Departament d'Enginyeria Minera i Recursos Naturals - Mining Engineering and Natural Resources Department-) and participates actively in the following forums and networks:
- Xarxa ADECAGUA, Association for the defence of the quality of water.
- European Water Association (EWA).
- Environmental Commission of the Cololegi Oficial d' Enginyers Industrials de Catalunya
