The main activities of the Surface Technology Unit are:
- Nano and micromechanical characterization of materials.
- Preparation and characterization of PVD functional coatings.
SURFACE TECHNOLOGY NANO AND MICROMECHANICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF MATERIALS
Characterization by means of instrumented indentation (nanoindentation and microindentation) of the surface of
materials, coatings and micrometric particles.
Determination of:
- Hardness and Young modulus.
- Fracture toughness.
- Microscratch resistance.
SURFACE TECHNOLOGY NANO AND MICROMECHANICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF MATERIALS
Equipment:
- Nano Indenter XP (MTS) with CSM module (Continuous Stiffness Measurement), high load module up to 10 N and microscratch option.
- Micro indenter of CSM Instruments. Maximum load 30 N and acoustic emission sensor.
SURFACE TECHNOLOGY PREPARATION OF PVD FUNCTIONAL COATINGS
Preparation of functional coatings obtained by means of cathodic arc physical vapor
deposition (PVD) technique:
- Metallic coatings.
- Ceramic hard coatings: ZrN, TiN, CrN, TiAlN, etc.
- Oxides: TiO2, ZrO2, etc.
SURFACE TECHNOLOGY PREPARATION OF PVD FUNCTIONAL COATINGS
