MATERIALS TECHNOLOGY: ARTDECO
Over the last few years the different markets are making ever greater demands for products that are better finished and last longer. On the other hand, most of the sectors which led the Spanish economy (automotion, construction industry, optics, etc) make use of different types of decorative surface finishes. In these, as well as in other sectors, the requirements of the markets which are every time more globalised and have more competence make it necessary for companies to make a great effort so as to provide their products with competitive advantages.
It is in this scenario where the Project ARTDECO (Advances in Technological Coatings for Decorative Applications www.cenitartdeco.com), emerges. It is one of the 16 projects which have received the support of the program of National Strategic Consortiums for technological Research (CENIT) in its third call for proposals (2007-2011). The project, lead by the company TORRECID and the technological centre AIN, consists of a consortium of 11 companies and 12 research centres and counts with a global budget of 23 million Euros. The project focuses on the development of processes which will make possible higher quality finishes with new features. ARTDECO will generate new knowledge which will be useful for the creation of new products, processes and services and also for the integration of technologies with strategic interest. The implementation of these technologies will facilitate the creation of areas of expertise in superficial treatments where the partners of the consortium can position themselves in the vanguard of advance techniques for superficial treatment.
The Area of Materials Technology of Fundació CTM Centre Tecnològic leads the activity of Tribological Functionalisation. This activity consists mainly in the implementation, adaptation and realisation of the different mechanical and tribological characterisation techniques of the different coatings which are going to be developed during the project. To that purpose, it will determine the suitable techniques and experimental equipment for the characterisation of the mechanical and tribological performance of the coatings setting protocols and specific characterisation methodologies which will make possible to correlate the results obtained with the performance of the coatings in final service for the different applications considered in the project. This way, the results obtained in this activity will act as a source of feedback affecting directly the design and implementation of the new industrial processes developed during the project.
