PROCESSES: ICARO
Advanced Innovation of Composites and Optimisation of the rear axle
ICARO is a CENIT project lead by AIRBUS which focuses on the development of new manufacturing methods of structural components based on composite materials. In this project participate 12 companies and 20 universities and technological centres. A very interesting matter for the aerospace industry is the automatic manufacturing of components with composite material. Nowadays, thanks to its high specific rigidity, composite (carbon fibre + Epoxy Resin) is the main material used in the aerospace industry. The main handicap of this sort of material is that, as opposed to what happens with metallic materials, its forming process is still in the present day manual, following several handmade procedures. The new Unit for Composite Materials of the Area of Forming Processes of CTM participates in this project as a public entity for research subcontracted by Applus+, LGAI (Development of products, testing and certification) division, which is a company that participates in the project ICARO within the work pack that focuses on the automatisation and optimization of processes and set ups.
Companies and centres which are collaborating on the project apart from CTM: Airbus; The partner companies and technological centres which collaborate in the work pack: Applus+ and CTM.
